Fire Wardens

The Fire Warden program runs on a seasonal basis throughout the summer. The program is a "grass roots" organization that utilizes persons with local knowledge of the Kamloops Fire Zone area. Fire Wardens constitute a fundamental support system to the basic wild fire organization. Operational duties of the Fire Wardens include fire suppression, special patrol, logistics support and public relations. The Fire Wardens have the following basic responsibilities.

  • report all wildfires immediately and accurately
  • prevent forest fires through inspections and public education
  • fire prevention through patrol of general and specific routes
  • involved in expanded force organization on major fire situation
  • aid in establishment and enforcement of full force closures
  • patrol recreation sites for fire safety and maintenance
  • ensure open burning is safe and in compliance with the regulations

Fire Wardens are divided into two types based on fireline responsibility. Type "A" Fire Wardens actually work on the fireline, usually in a supervisory position. These Fire Wardens are fit for fire suppression duty and certified as crew bosses. Type "B" Fire Wardens are generally involved in special patrol, checking on fires and delivery of supplies to the fireline. The minimum reqirements for a Type "B" Fire Warden is the S100 training.
