WILLIAMS LAKE -- Thanks to fast initial attack and the hard work of firefighters in the Cariboo region, a fire that started yesterday afternoon was contained at just over one hectare. The fire was reported by the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department shortly after 3:00 p.m. yesterday. At that time, the fire had spread from the Interlakes refuse site into the surrounding forest fuels and was moving toward Judson Road, approximately 2 km from the head of the fire.

Wildfire Management Branch personnel worked with members of the Deka Lake and Interlakes volunteer fire departments to contain the fire quickly. Wildfire Management Branch dispatched an airtanker group, one helicopter, one piece of heavy machinery, one water truck and 17 firefighters.

The fire is now in mop-up and 10 personnel from the Cariboo Fire Centre will continue to work today to suppress hot spots within the perimeter of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An open burning restriction remains in effect until noon Sept. 30, throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre . This fire serves as a reminder that safe and responsible burning practices are paramount.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on your cellular phone or toll-free at 1-800 663-5555.
