SMITHERS -- As the last long weekend of the summer draws near, recreationalists are reminded to make sure their campfires are out before leaving an area as hot dry weather is predicted for the following week. Although the weather has been cool and wet this season, the forecasted hot and dry weather will mean that any fires left smouldering could potentially ignite and turn into a wildfire. So far this season, crews have responded to 18 wildfires within the Northwest Fire Centre's boundaries, 13 of which were person-caused and therefore, entirely preventable.

Currently no burning bans are in place in the Northwest Fire Centre. However, if you are going camping this weekend and plan on having a campfire, please ensure fires are not lit or kept burning during windy conditions. Have adequate tools, water and people on hand to contain a fire, and ensure fires are fully extinguished before leaving the area. For large industrial sized burning, you are required to obtain a burn registration number, which can be obtained by calling 1 888 797-1717.

Quote: Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson -- "Thanks to the unsettled weather and cool conditions in most of the province, this fire season has been one of the slowest on record. However, over 70 per cent of the fires in the Northwest Fire Centre have been as a result of carelessness. I am urging people to be vigilant with any outdoor burning and to remember that a wildfire can start in an instant, even in cooler weather."
